Telstra is Australia’s fastest mobile network. It also has the widest coverage, especially outside of metropolitan areas. If you are travelling to regional Australia, we recommend a Telstra Pre-paid SIM card for the best coverage.
Telstra also supports 5G, the newest generation of mobile Internet speeds. If you have a supported device such as iPhone 12 or above, you can take advantage of these very fast speeds.
Step 1: Check Compatibility and Coverage
To check whether your phone or device is compatible with Telstra’s network, please visit FrequencyCheck.

Please contact your current carrier to confirm whether your device is locked to their network. You may need to request that they unlock your device before you can connect to the Telstra network.
Step 2: Purchase a Telstra Pre-Paid SIM card
Once you have decided whether this SIM card is right for you, order it and wait for it to arrive!
You can expect the SIM card to arrive within 1 to 3 weeks, however we recommend ordering at least 1 month in advance of your trip to ensure that it arrives in time.
Step 3: Put the SIM card in your device
This Starter Kit contains a single multi-fit SIM card in all sizes: Full Size, Micro, and Nano. Just select which size you need and pop the SIM card out of the frame, using the instructions provided in the Starter Kit.
Step 4: Activate the SIM Card
Once you arrive in Australia you will be able to activate the SIM card using the instructions provided in the Starter Kit. You will be given a variety of different plans to choose from. Visit the Telstra Pre-Paid plan site for more details.
One form of ID will be required to activate the SIM card. The following forms of ID are all accepted: International Passport, Australian Passport, Australian Driver’s License, and Green Medicare Card.
Note that Telstra advises that activation can be within minutes, but can take up to 24 hours under some circumstances.
Telstra SIM cards cannot be activated prior to arrival in Australia.
